A Prudent Wife

By the title, you’re probably wondering what this has to do with finances.  But check out this verse first.

Proverbs 19: 14 House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the Lord. KJV

The word prudent comes up in the Old Testament about seventeen times.  So I thought I should look up the definition to make sure I have a good understanding of the meaning.

According to Webster’s Dictionary (copyright 1958), prudent means cautious and judicious, careful, not extravagant.  Of course, I decided to look up the word extravagant because it’s an antonym to prudent.  Finding the meaning of the antonym helps you to understand the meaning of a word as well.

Extravagant means profuse in expense; excessive; prodigal; wasteful; unrestrained.  All kinds of images are stirred up with the word extravagant.

With finances, extravagant may look like spending more on wants than needs.  Or creating debt with no idea of the consequences. Or not having a disciplined lifestyle according to what you make. Expenses may be exceeding the amount you earn. Buying more and more material possessions to create a certain image or lifestyle for others to see.  These are the images extravagant conjured up for me.

A prudent wife comes from the Lord.  I believe we need to know that the Lord has called wives to be prudent.  I noticed that a different verse in the bible, paired prudent along with the word discipline.  We need to have discipline when it comes to our finances.  What may that picture look like?  Well, everyone’s picture may look a little different according to how the Lord directs everyone.

Are you like me and realized that there is room for improvement when it comes to dealing with finances? Do you lack prudence in certain areas?

I tell you I learned alot by just searching out prudenc and convicted as well. AND I am asking the Lord to show me to be prudent.  If you need prudence in your life, search it out in the Bible and meditate on God’s Word regarding prudence.  Ask the Lord to help you be prudent in all affairs in your life. He WILL help you.
